Our Mission

EcoEats was founded by three developers (Hardik, Saurav, and Punit) who recognized a paradox: while millions go hungry, mountains of perfect food are discarded daily by banquets, hotels, and farms. We built this platform to seamlessly bridge the gap between surplus providers and those who need it most.

Understanding the Crisis

The Global Perspective

Food wastage is a massive global problem, with approximately one-third of all food produced for human consumption going to waste each year. This amounts to billions of tons of food, representing a massive economic and environmental loss.

The environmental consequences are devastating. It contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss. When we waste food, we squander all the energy, water, and resources utilized in its production and transportation.

In stark contrast, millions worldwide suffer from food insecurity. Sustainable development principles emphasize that reducing food waste at the consumer, retail, and production levels is essential for the future of our planet.

Primary Causes of Wastage

1. Over-Purchasing & Portion Sizes: Driven by bulk discounts and large restaurant servings.

2. Improper Storage: Leading to premature spoilage of fresh produce.

3. Expiration Date Confusion: "Best by" labels indicate peak quality, not food safety, leading to safe food being tossed.

4. Cosmetic Standards: Supermarkets rejecting "ugly" but perfectly nutritious fruits and vegetables.

5. Supply Chain Inefficiency: Poor transportation and storage infrastructure resulting in transit spoilage.

Impact in Schools & Colleges

Educational institutions are major contributors to waste through cafeteria overproduction and "tray" dining defaults. However, they are also prime spots for intervention.

By implementing trayless dining, adjusting portion controls, and creating food sharing tables, campuses can drastically reduce waste. Furthermore, integrating leftover meal redistribution policies allows universities to support students facing food insecurity on their own campuses.
